Read online Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen.pdf PDF, EPUB, MOBI, TXT, DOC Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen This was a highly enjoyable read, with its suspense filled accounts of 100 mile races and the characters that ran them for fun.  I tried to figure out if it was fiction or non-fiction and settled on fictionalized.  For instance the bit on Emil Zapotek the Czech runner who won gold in the 5,000 metre and 10,000 metre 1952 Olympics, also ran the Marathon for something to do and won that too.  McDougall said that when the Soviets invaded his country they offered him a chance to support their side, which he declined and thus ended up cleaning toilettes in Siberia and was never heard from again.  Wikipedia has a different take >https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_...He didnt exactly disappear but metaphorically i suppose it was accurate that he no longer raced. From my Anthropology courses i knew the Tarahumara were an indigenous people of northern Mexico but i had to check if they were the runners the author made them out to be > https://ultra-x.co/tarahumara-maratho...  And they were.Chapter 28 was Gold for me on the diffrences between humans, who can run, and (DNA similar) chimps, that cannot.  We are the only species that sweats away heat and can take more than one breath during a stride, thus the basis for an evolutionary advantage.  McDougall even offered an explanation why stronger smarter Neanderthal faded away with the ice ages. When it came to finding a real example of a people that could outrun wildlife i was fairly screaming > consider the Kalahari San, watch Paul van der Merwes "People of the White Stone", part of the BBCs Vanishing Tribes series.  The author came across a worthy alternative, claiming there were only six true Bushman alive, in remote Namibia, to track that way.  Perhaps if hed gone to !Xade, in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve he could have found more.A movie is in the works; it will be sad that so much will have to be left out by Christopher McDougall

Free-Range Kids, Giving Our Children the Freedom We Had Without Going Nuts with Worry A fellow parent once commented on my use of bed bumpers with my two-year-olds who had recently transitioned out of cribs. “They’ll be fine if they fall out of bed!” Well, yes. Of course they will. But...I was (am) a tired mom who likes a full night of sleep and was fine with doing one extra little step if it would help us all in the house to maybe sleep through the night. This book made me feel the same way as that comment. I almost rounded my rating up to 3 stars because I agree with most of her points. I am all for more independence and free play for my kids and less worry for me Free-Range Kids, Giving Our Children the Freedom We Had Without Going Nuts with Worry by Lenore Skenazy

A Circle of Nations: Voices and Visions of American Indians (The Earthsong Collection) The beginning was pretty confusing because I didn’t really know what they were talking about. The authors would refer to something that had happened, but not give the full story and really say what they were talking about, so it didn’t make sense to me. Also, the book was full of pictures with no captions. I didn’t know if they were taken by the author, if they were the writer themselves, or their family, or just random pictures put there that didn’t go with the story at all. There were no titles to the pictures, no names of the people A Circle of Nations: Voices and Visions of American Indians (The Earthsong Collection) by Leslie Marmon Silko

From Rebel to Ruler: One Hundred Years of the Chinese Communist Party Good stuff though rather episodic, so I felt frequently dropped into historically significant situations rather than getting the where drifts and trends were coming from. Perhaps that would be more true of the frequently opaque rising and falling of the Chinese elite from 1960-1980.... still, it felt fair and i learned a lot. As usual, focused most on Cultural Revolution coming in and going out From Rebel to Ruler: One Hundred Years of the Chinese Communist Party by Tony Saich

Deep Kiss of Winter (Includes: Immortals After Dark, #7; Alien Huntress, #3.5) by Kresley Cole 2024-05-02T23:46:15+00:00

Deep Kiss of Winter (Includes: Immortals After Dark, #7; Alien Huntress, #3.5) Deep Kiss of Winter was the first time Ive read authors Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter (though Showalters Intertwined is sitting in my TBR pile). Deep Kiss of Winter actually contains two books: Untouchable and Tempt Me Eternally.I found the mythology in Untouchable to be interesting. The story combined lore from the worlds of the fae, vampires, Valkyrie, demons, and more. I learned things about mythical creatures that I hadnt known before, and I thought the story was extremely well-researched. However, I had problems with the characters Deep Kiss of Winter (Includes: Immortals After Dark, #7; Alien Huntress, #3.5) by Kresley Cole
